Artist Postmortem - Parker Chester






My name is Parker Chester and I worked as the main artist for Mercurial! This game was created as part of a 4-week game project as assigned through Game Design 2 at WSU.
I approximately spent upwards of 30-40 hours on this project in the four weeks we had,
My primary role in this project was to create all of the concept art, character art/animations, and UI as seen throughout the game. In addition of creating the art, I also worked as a level designer near the end of the project. I created the initial design of the map and then found an asset pack that would fit with the PS2 style we were trying to achieve. I also created the final level along with all of the set-dressing.
The most difficult parts of this project ultimately came down to my own time management. I am currently a full-time student with multiple other classes, so managing my time so that I can also achieve what is needed for this project, but also my team is something I like to pay careful attention to. During this project, I had to leave for a week for GDC (which was amazing!), but it meant that I had to finish a lot of my work for this project at least a week in advanced. But I think overall I did well dealing with those circumstances.
The only other issue that occurred was due to miscommunication on the level design that wasn't clear until near the end of the project. Due to when this project was due and the teams schedule, I had stepped in last minute to make a version of the level that was more in-line with what we had discussed.
As for what I am proud of? Honestly, the whole project! While many aspects require more finessing or maybe even redoing, the art, design, mechanics, and story came together very well into a solid piece of work that I am very happy with. I am also very happy that I was able to create three fully animated characters for this project in such a short amount of time!
I learned a lot of UI in this project. I had to do a lot of research to understand the sizing properties and what makes a UI standout while also fitting within the game it's representing.
My teams main ispiration came from games like Carrion, Mouthwashing, Ultrakill, and others similar.
